Basics Of Yeast Infections

Yeast infections cause a lot of discomfort and embarrassment as they often occur in the genital areas of the human body. The fungal infection is accompanied by itching and irritation of the infected area. In severe cases, the itching becomes more frequent and there may be swelling of the infected area. When you realize that you have an infection, the first thing you must do is rush to your doctor. Most doctors are well equipped to deal with yeast infections and they will give you the right medication for treating yeast infection.

Typically, most doctors diagnose the infection, confirm the infection, and then prescribe the yeast infection medications. In addition, they will give you the details of the medications that they are prescribing. The details of the medications that the doctors give are as follows:

o    Name of the medications, which are generally written on the doctor’s prescription letterhead

o    Information regarding the dosage, which may or may not be written on the prescription letterhead

o    Pros and cons of the prescribed medications, which is generally discussed with the patient

o    Precautions to be taken during and after the treatment, which will be discussed with the patient

In addition to the above mentioned information, the doctor will also mention the other treatment options other than medication. If the infection is severe, the doctor may prescribe yeast infection medications for few days and call you back to assess the spread of infection. If the yeast infection has not reduced visibly, the doctor may change the medication and call you after a week or so. Such cases are very rare, because most yeast infections are controlled by the medications.

When the medications are not curing the yeast infection, then there are two reasons. First, the yeast has become resistant to the specific medication and second, the infection may not be a yeast infection, but a bacterial infection. Yeasts are smart microorganisms and they can adapt very quickly. When a medication is used over and over again it adapts to that medication and safely protects itself. Most bacterial infections mimic the symptoms of yeast infections, so if you are taking an anti-fungal medication for a bacterial infection, the bacteria will not be affected at all.

For a doctor, treating a yeast infection may be very nominal but for a pharmacist it may no be so easy. It will be incorrect to assume that an experienced pharmacist is as good as a doctor because of the former’s mammoth experience with medicines. By definition, a pharmacist is an expert in dispensing drugs and not prescribing drugs. Enthralled by experienced pharmacist’s experience and knowledge people ask them for the medications without proper diagnosis of the yeast infection. This is very dangerous and can backfire if you are allergic to certain medications.

If you want to treat yeast infections on your own, then you need to be very sure that the medications you are going to use are effective and safe. When a couple is infected by a genital yeast infection, then it is imperative that both the partners meet the doctor and get the treatment done immediately. If only one partner gets treated for the yeast infection, then there are more chances of reoccurrence because the healthy partner can always be infected again due to intimate contact.

Repeated yeast infections can be very irritating and painful. If you get frequent bouts of yeast infections, then the doctor may ask you to undergo few tests such as vaginal culture and blood examination. The yeast infection can be a serious issue if the yeast cells have infected internal organs. In such cases, doctors may have to perform more tests to confirm the extent of the yeast infection. If the yeast infection is present in the bloodstream, then you may experience symptoms such as heartburns, constipation, bloated feeling, and chronic diarrhea.

The yeast infection is named a systemic Candida disease when the yeast invades the blood stream. If you leave this untreated, your overall health will get deteriorated and the internal organs may get infected. In very severe cases, you may have to be even hospitalized and treated for the spread of the yeast infection. So, don’t take the yeast infections lightly and treat it immediately.
