What is Candida Yeast Infections?
In medical parlance, candidiasis or moniliasis is a fungal infection that can affect any parts of a person’s body. Candida yeast infections can include infection of the mouth, skin, nails, vagina, intestinal tracts or mucous membranes found throughout the body.
It generally affects the moist parts of the body and can spread rather fast from the genitals or the mouth to the rest of the body. According to studies made by scientists, the body in normal state can harbor a small amount of the fungus called candida albicans. Together with some other harmless bacteria, the fungus competes with them thus, making the population of both bacteria and fungus under control.
However, because of medication like the taking in of antibiotics, the number or the population of the bacteria suddenly decreases, the population of the fungus might go uncheck without competition thus they can thrive profusely and can cause unwanted symptoms in a person.
Candidiasis that occurs in the vagina can also be popularly called as yeast infection is very common and tends to recur frequently. The symptoms can include vaginal itching, redness, a thick and odorless discharge can also be observed. And this vaginal infection can cause discomfort during urination and during sexual intercourse.
However, this is not a very serious disorder and can be treated with yeast infection medication prescribed by most medical doctors. This could also be availed easily in most drugstores.
Among drug dependents and addicts or other seriously ill persons, the candida fungus can enter the bloodstream and can invade the kidneys, brain or lung of the person. This is a possible occurrence but in most cases this is very rare.
The general cause of the spread of the candida fungus is attributed mainly to:
• Antibiotics – taking in of antibiotics to eliminate bacteria in the body is also the cause why the candida fungus becomes strong. Their natural opponent becomes weak or is totally eliminated thus the fungus is left alone to thrive unopposed in their moist environment like in the mouth or the genital areas.
• Birth control pills – the use of pregnancy or birth control pills can also disrupt or disturb the normal acidity and moisture of the vagina. The altered state of the otherwise normal flora is conducive to the abnormal growth and development of the fungus. This will lead to yeast infection.
• Diabetes – diabetes mellitus sufferer or patients are also at a greater risk of contracting the candida fungus mainly because of the affected immune system.
• Weak immune system – general lack of body defense mechanism like a weak immune system can also lead to the unusual development of the candida fungus. People with AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) or other immune disorders are also prone to suffer from this fungus. Also, people taking immunosuppressant drugs or those people undergoing chemotherapy are also in danger.
The most common yeast infection treatments available in the market today are those of antifungal creams, suppositories or tablets. These medications are for candidiasis of the vagina, penis, throat or mouth. These are prescribed by qualified medical professionals or doctors. For the vaginal yeast infections meanwhile, can be had over the counter. But again people suffering from this fungal infection should consult first with their physicians.
For the mouth candidiasis fungal infection, the doctor might prescribe a gentle mouthwash that will loosen some hardened secretions in the mouth. This would be a form of relief for the sufferer.
For the more serious cases of this fungal infection a yeast infection medication is also available however, this should be taken internally via the use intravenous antifungal drugs. This means that it has to be injected directly thru the bloodstream for it to be effective. This is usually prescribed for severe cases of candidiasis of the throat, digestive system or even of the mouth.
If any sign of the candidiasis fungus or candida yeast infections symptoms starts to appear in your body, it is best to see your medical doctor. He can prescribe specific medication suited to your condition and situation. Do not attempt to treat your condition thru self-medication.
